Charlotte has made her biggest passion her career (Spoiler: not running – just yet!)…
Name: Charlotte Collyer (with a y not an i!)
Job role: Manage the Digital Skills Partnership for Devon, Somerset, Plymouth and Torbay
Biggest Passion: Running (that’s really bad! I also have 3 great kids and a fab soulmate that I lived with for more years than not – these guys are my glue)
Social handles: @CharlieCollyer @HotSWSkills&Careers
What motivates you to do what you do?
Learning – creating opportunities for others to learn and developing my own knowledge.
How do you start your mornings?
Running. I live on Dartmoor and often start my day with my sprocker doing a hilly and muddy 5 miles. Or if it’s blowing a hoolie, laps in my local pool – it’s odd I used to think swimming was REALLY boring but once you go through the boredom it’s actually a great reflective way to start the day.
What does a ‘typical’ day at work look like?
I cover a big geography so I can be at any one of our 10 FE colleges, 2 universities, numerous business parks or offices. I also spend at least one day in Whitehall once a month as my post is funded by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport which is pretty cool. However, when I’m not out and about, I’m most productive in my home office and secondly most productive in my office courtesy of GWR
Who do you lunch with?
My laptop (bad habit)
When are you most productive?
Can I say all day? I work fast and work hard but I also make sure I take a good dose of exercise each day and this is ‘the’ golden time for reflecting on the conversations and plotting next stages.
What one thing do you try to do every day?
So apart from the exercise addiction ( I’ve not mentioned a weekly dose of boxing, badminton, yoga and the odd canter!). I make sure I switch my phones off (personal and work) in order to just ‘be’ around my family.
What was your talk about?
So I’m not going to talk Digital Skills Partnership – you’ve had that talk already!
I’m going to tell you about 70 funded places on Digital Momentum. If you want to get into IT, learn about Networks, Systems or Cyber or Data Science Python and Data Analytics – my talk needs you!
What is the best resource for people who want to dive in deeper?
What is the one app/website/blog/newsletter that you wish was your idea?
Can it be a channel? If so Desert Island Discs – I love hearing others inspirational stories
What is the biggest challenge in the [field/topic/industry] at the moment?
There is appetite to learn but everyone’s so stacked giving it the time it requires is a challenge. We need to change cultures in the workplace and help businesses understand that by investing in their people through downtime for well -being and through a ring-fenced allowance for professional CPD – the payback will be a more productive, smarter, happier team that enjoys what they do.
Charlotte, we’re looking forward to meeting you. Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions!
