Digital Exeter January 2016 Meet-up
First Meet-up of Digital Exeter for 2016 and it was bigger than ever
We had a full house for our first meet-up of 2016. So full in fact that we are going to have to limit tickets for future meet-ups so we don’t break the fire regs at our lovely venue, The City Gate Hotel
50+ folk turned up from right across the Digital Spectrum, some were Marketers, Social Media Specialists, Developers, others were Entrepreneurs, Start-ups and Community organisations. We are delighted to be zooming in on 400 members in our Meet-up group after only 9 months.
Our aim is really simple, put on a few really useful talks and get like-minded people together in a room. The rest is Human nature, we are social creatures, so we rely on those conversations you have to start building the know-like-trust process that is essential for a strong community to grow.
But please do let us know if we are getting things right, or wrong. And do leave a review on meetup.com. Here’s a quick overview of January’s Meet-up…
This Month’s Speakers
The line-up of speakers was more technical in nature than at previous meet-ups so I was interested to see how people reacted. (You can also let me know personally as well.) We also had two last minute replacement speakers, which is how it goes sometimes but they both did a great job of stepping up – well done Daniel and Sri!
Geoff Revill – Fosterting Trust in Digital Engagement
Geoff founded Krowdthink a privacy focused Networking App and he gave a great presentation talking about Trust and Privacy. I was surprised at how little I knew about how my data is collected and used. The extent of mobile tracking raised a few eyebrows! Geoff talked about the issues around building engagement in a trustworthy way with privacy by design and how respecting peoples rights can ultimately be a competitive advantage for businesses and organisations that get it right.

Sri Udupi – Know your Data, an overview of Big Data
We are thankful for Sri to step in at short notice to talk about Big Data. Sri is an engineer at Black Swan Data and he gave an overview of what is Big Data and how it is used by businesses like Tesco to predict the best weekend to sell BBQ goods in their stores. Such a technical subject is challenging to talk about in any detail in just 15 minutes but there were questions from the audience about how Big Data can be useful to smaller businesses and marketers so maybe we need to look at this specific topic for a future meet-up.

Daniel D’Auria – SEO predictions for 2016
If we were thankful for Sri stepping in at short notice then poor Daniel had less that 24hrs notice to step in to do this talk! He did a great job and talked to the audience about his predictions in SEO for 2016.Daniel, a SEO Strategist at The Organic Agency talked about how Content Relevance is now the king and that means that keyword research is not as important as Intent research. He also taked about having a multi-channel approach to SEO in 2016 and how YouTube can’t be ignored anymore as a Search Engine.
